Black History Month at the gallery

-

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria hosts a free public open house with the opening of a new exhibition and a documentary to honour Black History Month on Saturday, followed by a jazz concert on Sunday.

Enjoy free admission to the art gallery on Saturday to view the new exhibition, Moving Forward by Looking Back: The First 30 Years of Collecting Art at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The exhibition is curated by chief curator Michelle Jacques and can be found in the Founders and Drury Galleries. It opens Saturday and runs until Sept. 4

Also on Saturday, in honour of Black History Month, the art gallery will collaborate with the B.C. Black History Awareness Society and MediaNet to present For Jackson: A Time Capsule From His Two Grandmothers, a documentary portrait of two Canadian women for their young grandson. The screening is to be followed by a questionand-answer session with the artist, Leila Sujir. Admission is by donation for the 49-minute film, which starts at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, the rafters of the Spencer Gallery will reverberate with the sound of jazz at Great Canadian Jazz-Music in the Key of Eh, with professor Patrick Boyle. The session is part of Jazz at the Gallery — improvised music performed by West Coast musicians — presented in co-operation with the U-JAM Society.

Admission to the concert is $35 or $30 for art gallery/U-JAM members. The price includes admission to the gallery’s exhibits. The concert runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The month ends with the closing of the About Face show and sale in the Massey Sales Gallery on Feb. 28.

All events take place at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1040 Moss St. For information, go to aggv.ca.
