Oak Bay upset in basketball quarters

- MARIO ANNICCHIARICO

There will not be a gold medal in the near future for the Oak Bay Breakers; in fact, there will shockingly not be a medal at all.

An 81-78 quarter-finals setback to Lord Tweedsmuir on Thursday afternoon means the No.1-seeded and previously undefeated Breakers can finish no higher than fifth at the B.C. triple-A senior girls’ basketball championship in Langley.

No. 8 Lord Tweedsmuir now faces No. 5 Panorama Ridge in one semifinal at 3:30 p.m. today, while No. 2 Abbotsford plays No. 3 and three-time defending champion Brookswood in the other semifinal at 5:15 p.m.

“It was an absolutely amazing evening. Two teams with opposite styles going at it, one that was big and slower and the other that was quick and shoots fast,” said Lord Tweedsmuir coach Curtis McCrae.

The Breakers will face No. 4 Walnut Grove today to try to advance to the fifthplace game on Saturday.

Meanwhile, on the consolation side, the Claremont Spartans had a 29-19 lead on Carson Graham at halftime, but lost a 49-46 squeaker after dropping a 79-55 result to Brookswood on opening day.

The Dover Bay Dolphins faced Sir Winston Churchill late Thursday night.

At the double-A championship, the Ballenas Whalers opened the tournament Wednesday with a 65-53 win over Okanagan Mission, but ran into No. 1 Seycove in Thursday afternoon’s quarter-final play. The top seed disposed of No. 9 Ballenas 89-64.
