Polar Bear Watching

IN CANADA’S GREAT WHITE NORTH Join a Tundra Buggy adventure and head into the heart of polar bear country in the company of an expert naturalist.

Many would not think of Manitoba in November as a top travel destination, let alone a tiny northern Manitoba community with fewer than 1,000 residents – perched on the shores of the soon to be ice-filled Hudson Bay. But every year, as summer fades into winter, visitors from across the country and around the world make the journey.

Around this same time, hundreds of massive white figures begin to emerge from the wild tundra and gather around the shores of nearby Wapusk National Park, in eager anticipation of great hunting opportunities soon to commence on the ice packs filling the Hudson Bay.

Churchill, recognized as the “Polar Bear Capital of the World”, is the best place to see the great bears of the north in their natural habitat. Seeing the sheer power and size of the polar bears with your own eyes is an unforgettable experience. The excitement, joy, fear and fascination felt when witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat stays with guests for years to come. A genuine appreciation of nature at it’s finest kindles the effort needed to preserve their fragile natural habitats.

Sitting close to the town of Churchill, Wapusk National Park and the Churchill Wildlife Management area is well protected and supervised by the local authorities, to prevent stealth hunters from getting too close to the community. Keeping people safe from the bears and, equally important, the bears safe from the people, is a top priority. Protection of the wild northern habitat and its inhabitants is key to the sustainability of the local tourism industry and economy of the community. Local officials and tour operators take great pride in educating visitors from around the world of the environmental threats the north faces; the sustainable tourism industry is a major sponsor of polar bear conservation efforts.

This November, Mile Zero Tours will escort a group of Vancouver Islanders straight to Churchill to participate in this once in a life time experience. They will join a Tundra Buggy adventure and head into the heart of polar bear country in the company of an expert naturalist. Guests will spend two full days exploring the sub-arctic landscape, searching for the majestic polar bear and other arctic wildlife aboard a cozy Tundra Buggy. This 7-day adventure also includes a cultural tour of Churchill, dog sledding demonstration, a stopover in Winnipeg, plus much more.
