Another wish list for the election
Re: “One reader’s wishes for this election,” letter, March 25.
Here are suggestions for more.
Pay a sufficient welfare rate so that people can look for a job instead of spending their days looking for food and shelter.
Regulate the greed out of the real estate industry. House prices increased by 45 per cent from 2006 to 2016, meaning that real estate agents have received a 45 per cent pay increase. They are motivated to seek buyers from all over the globe, creating a very serious issue for long-term renters who get pushed out when a new buyer takes over.
Cut B.C. Ferries prices by half, and figure out how to do this without decreasing service levels. A million-plus people in coastal communities have been severely affected financially by the current pricing.
Provide a family doctor for every family, as previously promised.
Manage IT projects professionally so that hundreds of millions of dollars are not blown away by non-functioning system design and implementation.
Regulate retail gasoline prices that are governed by a monopolistic industry. Most refined gasoline is shipped from American refineries that also supply gasoline to Seattle. Recently gasoline was selling in Seattle for 88 cents a litre Canadian. These prices could be regulated through the public utilities commission.
Develop a cost-reduction plan whose objective would be to reduce the cost of running the provincial government by 25 per cent over the next five years.
Put in place a premier who is more concerned with the welfare of his/her constituents rather than with an American credit watch organization.
