Colwood junior Gudz swinging a hot club

- MARIO ANNICCHIARICO

The Keaton Gudz express just keeps rolling.

The Royal Colwood junior claimed his second straight Bayview Place Vikes Performance Tour victory on Monday, leading the amateur field with a 2-under 69 and tying for the overall lead with the pros at the Cordova Bay stop.

The 17-year-old had won the opener on his home course two weeks prior and also claimed the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s Western Junior Championship at the Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey two weekends ago.

Next month, the future Oregon State University golf team member will be at an American Junior Golf Association’s Open event in Arizona.

On Monday, Gudz finished three shots better than Alex Cartwright (UVic Vikes) and Michael Griffin (Uplands Golf Club), who both shot 1-over 72s. Angus Marler (Bear Mountain) and Mike Belleau (Olympic View) were tied for fourth, another two shots back, while Kevin Carrigan (Royal Colwood), Mac Keats (Bear Mountain) and Michael Flegel (Camosun College) were tied for sixth at 5-over 76.

“It’s awesome,” Gudz said of the victories. “You’ve got to celebrate when you win because it doesn’t happen all the time. I played pretty well, a little shaky on the front.”

He had an eagle, one birdie and three bogeys on the front nine.

Gudz leads the amateur order of merit after two events, well ahead of Carrigan and Cartwright in second and third, respectively.

On the pro side, Nate Ollis (Cordova Bay) and Darren Day Jr. (Royal Colwod) finished tied at 2-under 69, one shot up on Terrance Drader (Victoria).

Weintraub, of Gorge Vale, is the leader in the pro order of merit, ahead of Ben Griffin of Uplands and Eric Wang of the Victoria Academy of Golf.

The order of merit winners on the amateur and pro side will earn an exemption to play in the Bayview Place DC Payments Open presented by the Times Colonist on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada on June 8-11 at Uplands.

The next local tour stop is April 10 on Bear Mountain’s Valley Course.
