Shawnigan squashes competition
It’s a hat-trick of squash titles for Shawnigan Lake School’s Michael Mehl. Mehl, originally from Alberta, won his third straight U-19 title last weekend at the Canadian Junior Squash Championships at Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver.
To gain the title, Mehl had to beat his schoolmate, Ryan Picken, in the gold-medal game. Both Mehl and Picken advanced the U-19 final without losing a game and in the championship match it was Mehl prevailing 11-2, 11-4, 11-13, 11-4.
Following the tournament, Picken was named the winner of the Alexander Doucas Memorial Award, given to the junior player best exemplifying spirit of fair play, sportsmanship and commitment to excellence.
