Look what the car dragged in
When Morgan Brooker was told his engine was purring, the last thing he expected to see was an actual kitten being lifted from under the hood of his car.
Brooker left for work Monday morning and parked his silver Audi on the roof of the Broughton Street parkade.
About 10:30 a.m., a colleague of Mandy Rogers told her she had heard the high-pitched mewing of a kitten coming from under the hood of Brooker’s car. Rogers, a cat-lover who works at the Hunt and Gather Salon near the parkade, went up with some treats and water to try to coax the kitten out of the engine.
“He was meowing so much, he was really scared,” she said. She was also worried about the hot sun heating the hood of the car.
She called animal control, who were able to call Victoria police to find the car’s owner.
About noon, Brooker got a call from a police officer who said “there’s a cat in your engine.” The officer asked him to meet the animal control officer at the vehicle.
When he got to the parkade, Rogers was there waiting to make sure the kitten got out safe.
Brooker popped the hood and the animal control officer scooped out the kitten, which was a runt about eight weeks old.
Brooker was told by the animal control officer that there’s a large population of feral cats living around the duck pond on Dallas Road, not far from where Brooker lives.
“It might have been chased by a dog or something and climbed up under the car,” Brooker said.
Rogers said if no one claims the kitten, she’s going to adopt it and call it Audi.
