Weaver had a chance and tossed it
Re: “Premier expects defeat,” May 31. The giant photos of NDP Leader John Horgan and Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver presenting their “pact” were nauseating. There were a few small pictures here and there of the actual winner of the election.
I am apolitical, but I find the machinations that are happening to be really base. If I had voted for the Green Party, I would be furious at what Weaver has done. He has betrayed every person who voted for him, by joining forces with the NDP.
His shallow thinking is that the NDP will further the Green Party’s agenda and causes. Maybe. He has made his little party, which did well this time around, into just a little caboose on the end of the NDP train.
Modern democracy is about the best, fairest system of governance. In theory. In reality it has one inherent flaw. You are governed by the people who are the best at getting themselves elected. And that can be a crap-shoot.
After the acrimonious fantasyland of the election campaign comes the tough reality of governing. And Weaver, on his first foray in this nasty realm, blew it.
Methinks, if he were at least a bit politically savvy, he would have just taken his seat in the legislature along with his two other Green MLAs. No deals or “pacts.” The Green Party could then have effectively controlled both main parties, considering the election score, and not be beholding to either.
By election chance, he had the big power and tossed it! Sad.
