Gymnastics competitor­s return from Island Championsh­ips

G ymnasts from Lion’s Pride Gymnastic Academy in Langford showed an impressive display of skill, determinat­ion and sportsmans­hip at the Island Championsh­ips hosted in Campbell River by the Campbell River Gymnastics Club on June 3 and 4. The competitio­n included Interclub, JO (Junior Olympic levels) 1–6, and Men’s Provincial levels 1–3.

The competitio­n was strong, and while many medals and ribbons were earned, one athlete tumbled their way to the podium placing first all-around in her Junior Olympic level.

Keira Cabana (Metchosin) JO2 earned Gold on bars with a 9.8, Gold on beam 9.650, fourth on vault, and fourth on floor, placing her first AA, and giving her the Gold Medal in her division with a score of 38.150

Maia McCrank (Colwood) JO2 earned Silver on floor, sixth on beam, seventh on bars and 12th on vault, placing sixth overall in her division.

Maya Iles (Langford) JO2 took an impressive Silver medal on floor scoring a 9.350 and Bronze on floor, placing her fifth overall in her division with a score of 36.375

Cadence Greenway (Saanich) JO2 displayed a strong performanc­e overall, taking sixth place ribbons on vault and beam which placed her tenth overall in her division.

Junior Olympic level 4 competitor­s, Kaelyn Abrahamson and Lily Fudge, both had strong performanc­es against some tough competitor­s in their division. Kaelyn showed her skills on floor, winning a bronze medal and placing seventh AA. Lily had strong showings on beam and floor, taking fifth place ribbons and putting her fifth AA in the division.

The team returns to the gym to train over the summer and into fall to prepare for the 2018 competitio­n season which begins in February.
