Clark is stalling recall of legislature

-

Re: “Horgan should name cabinet,” editorial; “B.C. should protect our future well-being,” column, June 14. I am puzzled by the impatient tone of the editorial. After all, it is Premier Christy Clark who has been stalling in calling the legislature back to work, not NDP Leader John Horgan.

I, for one, do not feel any anxiety about the new caucus. These are all intelligent, talented people who have just been elected by their constituents. Horgan has excellent people from whom to choose his new cabinet, and I trust him to make wise choices. Likewise, the two new Green MLAs are intelligent, hard-working people who have already inspired their supporters through their constituency work.

Further, I hope the writer of the editorial has had his or her anxiety assuaged by reading Trevor Hancock’s column on the same page.

To quote his eighth paragraph: “So if I have one key wish for this new government, it is that it takes a leaf from the Welsh Assembly and passes a Well-being of Future Generations Act. The act was passed in 2015, and it is intended to ‘improve the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales’ to ‘give future generations a good quality of life.’ ”

Thanks to Hancock for the excellent suggestion. His final words: “What’s not to like in this? If Wales can do it, there is no reason B.C. cannot; future generations will be very grateful.”

So, let’s get on with it, Clark, and get the legislature back to work. They are willing and able. M.J. Jordan Sidney
