LOS ANGELES — Actor Zachary Levi, of Chuck fame, listed his home in Los Angeles’s Studio City for $1.399 million US and, in less than two weeks, had received an offer.

Built in 1952, the remodelled house looks new, with upgrades that include stained hardwood floors, recessed lighting and contemporary hardware and fixtures.

Baseball player found his Fields of dreams

The onetime Beverly Hills home of Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Greenberg has come on the market for $9.5 million.

Known as the Fields House, the Regency-style home was designed by noted architect Craig Ellwood and built in 1957 as part of the Case Study program, an experiment in American residential architecture.

For the program, which ran from 1945 until 1966, Arts & Architecture magazine commissioned leading architects to design and build inexpensive and efficient model homes to feed the American housing boom that followed the Second World War. The result was 36 designs, many of which were built in Los Angeles.

Greenberg, who starred for the Detroit Tigers during the 1930s and ’40s, bought the house in 1974 for $258,000 and was its third owner.

Following his death in 1986 at age 75, the property was conveyed to Greenberg’s widow, actor Mary Jo Tarola, better known by her screen name Linda Douglas, who lived there until she died this year.

Set at the end of a cul-de-sac, the steel-framed house sits amid a canopy of mature trees on about one acre. The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home shares the site with a onebedroom guesthouse, a swimming pool and a covered pavilion.

A large motor court with a fountain sits just inside the gated entrance.

The interior includes openplan living and sitting rooms, a formal dining room and a library/den.

Skylights top an updated kitchen, which has an island/ breakfast bar. There are four fireplaces in 3,384 square feet of living space.

Greenberg was a power-hitting first baseman who won two World Series titles with the Tigers.

A two-time American League MVP, he was the first baseball player to earn $100,000 in a season and the first Jewish ballplayer to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Late Laugh-In co-star lived by the beach

In Malibu’s Broad Beach, the longtime home of actor and pinup model Dolly Read and her late husband, comedian Dick Martin, has returned to the market for $9.4 million.

The Cape Cod-style house, built in 1946, makes the most of its location on Malibu’s western end, with several balconies and a wood-plank walkway that leads directly to the sand. Views from the property are unobstructed and extend up and down the coastline.

The main house features open-beam ceilings, brick fireplaces, a cook’s kitchen and a wine cellar on the main floor. The master suite occupies the second level and has a sitting area, his and hers bathrooms and doors that open to a private deck.

A courtyard containing fountains and mature fruit trees sits between the main house and guesthouse, which has its own kitchen and private deck. Combined, the two residences offer nearly 4,700 square feet of living space.

The property, sitting on about a third of an acre, also has a three-car garage.

Martin, who died in 2008 at 86, was co-host of the popular Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In from the late 1960s to the early ’70s. He later directed such television shows as The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart.

Tucked behind tall hedges, the glass-and-steel spread has nine bedrooms and 10 bathrooms that include a two-storey master suite accessed by a glass-enclosed elevator. In the living room, a three-storey wall of windows takes in waterway views. Several kitchens, a media room and a professional recording studio are among other features.
