Tegan and Sara make Con covers version

-

TORONTO — Tegan and Sara are marking the 10th anniversary of their critically lauded album The Con with a covers version.

The Calgary-raised twins posted a message on their website saying all 14 songs from the original album are being re-recorded by 14 of their favourite artists.

The Con X: Covers will feature new versions of Back in Your Head, Call It Off and the title track.

Exactly who will cover each song remains a mystery. The duo says they’re holding back on the big reveal for now and will make the entire list of artists available at once.

Proceeds from the album, which is being released on Oct. 13, will be donated to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, an organization devoted to “economic justice, health and representation for LGBTQ girls and women.”

The Con, Tegan and Sara’s fifth studio album, is considered a significant milestone in their careers. It climbed to No. 4 on the Canadian Billboard albums chart and locked in their reputation as darlings of the indie music scene.

“When I hear another band or artist cover one of our songs it can be indescribable and pleasantly disorienting — creating hope where there was originally hopelessness or joy where there was only ever regret,” Sara Quin wrote in the announcement.

“In some ways, hearing someone else interpret something so familiar is a way to finally be freed from the personal history of the song and to hear it for the first time.”

Tegan and Sara will also launch an acoustic tour to celebrate the album.

The dates include Vancouver (Oct. 28), Calgary (Oct. 30) and Edmonton (Oct. 31).
