Mounties looking for driver in cyclist collision

-

Nanaimo RCMP are asking for public help in their investigation of a July 18 hit-and-run incident involving a bicycle and an SUV.

The cyclist, who was on his way to work at 3:30 a.m. when he was struck, was not seriously hurt. He was treated in hospital for cuts and scrapes.

The man admitted to police that he did not obey the stop sign at Bruce Avenue and Seventh Street before proceeding through the intersection.

The SUV driver left the scene without offering assistance, and was heard saying “Oh my God” before heading east on Seventh.

The cyclist said the SUV was black, but was unable to give further details about the vehicle or driver, or provide a licence number.

Police said there could be damage to the SUV’s front grill.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said the cyclist is fortunate his injuries were not more severe.

“Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who are involved in a collision, regardless of who may appear to be at fault, are required by law to remain at the scene, render assistance as necessary, and provide their name, address and vehicle-insurance information,” O’Brien said.

Nanaimo RCMP ask anyone with information on the collision to call them at 250-754-2345. Anonymous reports can be made by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, going to nanaimocrimestoppers.com or texting 274637 using the keyword “Nanaimo.”
