Oak Bay collector-car show full of surprises

-

Find the unexpected at the Oak Bay Collector Car Festival, expected to attract more than 15,000 spectators to Oak Bay Avenue on Sunday.

Unlike some car shows, this is not about perfection (although mint-condition cars won’t be turned away). Instead, it’s an opportunity to see less-than-perfect vehicles and ones usually hidden away in local garages.

Recently restored vehicles will sit side by side with cars in original condition and others in various stages of restoration.

The festival welcomes all makes and models, with up to 300 special-interest vehicles expected. Several car clubs in the region are set to attend — 14 Aston Martins and up to 30 electric cars and their owners are already confirmed.

This is the 17th year for the annual event. Expect to see a strong showing of classic British and European cars (which will all be placed together along the Penny Farthing Pub block).

There will undoubtedly be hot rods and vehicles made in Detroit.

Looking to buy or sell? Look for discreet small signs on vehicles looking for new owners.

Virtual Elvis is set to play from noon to 3 p.m. A prime rib barbecue will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the Oak Bay municipal hall.

Spectator admission to the festival is free, and show-car registration is $15. The event runs from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday on Oak Bay Avenue between Monterey Avenue and Mitchell Street. For more information, contact Ken Agate at kenagate@hotmail.com or call 250-896-9000.
