A blush of colour on the maple leaves near the village; a wisp of fog in the early morning on Cadboro Bay; young children shouting and laughing as they enjoy the last days of summer – all signs that fall is coming and school classes will start soon. I, too, am planning to go back to school this fall – at Goward House.

In September, I will begin my third year of Taoist Tai Chi at Goward House. I look forward to the twice-a-week classes. Our faithful instructors welcome everyone and bring humor with their expertise to help us learn and refine our moves.

Is my physical health improving? Definitely! My stamina has improved so much that I don’t feel exhausted any more at the end of the class – I feel energized. My peripheral vision and balance continue to improve. And my shoulders don’t click anymore – probably because of the Jongs, which are foundation exercises that focus on the joints.

The most notable change is that I am standing taller. For our kicks, we are encouraged to push up from our feet (remember this is a martial art). This, for me, ensures a stretching of the spine. And now, I notice I am doing this frequently through the day. No doubt I look loftier and straighter.

Is my memory improving? I still haven’t memorized the sequence of the 108 moves, but I don’t have to be right in the centre of the group any longer, as long as I still have a clear view of the more experienced members in each corner. Focusing my thoughts solely on the movements of the form makes me feel calm, almost meditative.

I can’t disregard the social benefits with this group of friendly people who have become supportive friends. For anyone wishing to try this martial art, Goward House will host Beginners’ Classes, conducted by Fung Loy Kok Taoist Tai Chi™ annually.

There will be an open house at Goward House on Tuesday, Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. until noon. Everyone is invited to come and learn about the health benefits, see a live demo, enjoy a free “try it” session and enjoy complimentary coffee or tea following the session. Tai Chi instructors will be glad to meet you and you’ll be glad, too. (See sidebar for Tai Chi course offerings.)
