JAZZ

What: P.J. Perry

Where: Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View St.

When: Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.

Tickets: $20 at hermannjazz.com or 250388-9166

Why: Juno-winning saxophonist P.J. Perry navigates the fast-flowing currents of bebop like few others. An old-school veteran of the jazz scene, Perry has played with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw and Tony Bennett. This time, he teams up with an accomplished duo — guitarist Oliver Gannon and bassist Neil Swainson — for what’s sure to be a series of memorable performances. Perry also also performs Sunday at the Crofton Hotel Pub in Crofton and Monday at the Simon Holt restaurant in Nanaimo.

THEATRE

What: Bed and Breakfast

Where: Belfry Theatre, 1291 Gladstone

When: Opens in previews Tuesday/Wednesday, opening night is Aug. 10

Tickets: $20 to $53 (250-385-6815)

Why: In the summer months, the Belfry Theatre traditionally offers a lighthearted production. This season, it’s Bed and Breakfast, a breezy comedy about a same-sex couple who run a B&B. This show stars Mark Crawford, who wrote the show, and Paul Dunn, whom audiences may remember from last year’s production of The Gay Heritage Project at the Belfry. (If you go on opening night, you’ll get the chance to see the Belfry’s newly renovated lobby.)

MUSIC

What: Anciients with Dead Quiet and Scimitar

Where: Sugar, 858 Yates St.

When: Saturday, 8 p.m.

Tickets: $15 at Lyle’s Place and ticketfly.com

Why: Metal shows of the upper echelon are somewhat rare around these parts, which adds an extra sense of excitement to the return of Vancouver favourites Anciients. The second date on the band’s month-long tour of Canada is sure to be full of songs from their acclaimed 2016 recording, Voice of the Void, which mixes the progressive with the punishing. In the metal world, that’s a good thing.
