Trump ‘is a beautiful and scary thing’ for Majumder
Fans can expect lampooning of U.S. leader at Sidney show

Shaun Majumder, the popular Canadian actor and comedian who once described himself as the Donald Trump of Burlington, N.L., is bringing his standup act back to the capital region.
With everything that’s going on in the U.S. right now, it’s a near-certainty Majumder will be lampooning the American commander-in-chief during his show at Sidney’s Mary Winspear Centre on Saturday night.
He’ll also be fondly referencing his Newfoundland hometown, pop. 350, a place he has often said he owes a debt of gratitude to for creative inspiration.
Majumder’s Trump references arose from his determination to turn his picturesque coastal hometown into a high-end, sustainable tourist destination a few years ago.
His ongoing quest, titled ’Ome Sweet ’Ome, was documented in the Majumder Manor TV series that ran for two seasons on the W Network.
Majumder recently said Trump’s antics are irresistible fodder for the next season of This Hour Has 22 Minutes, the long-running CBC-TV satirical series on which Majumder has been a regular since 2003.
“Now that Donald Trump is in power, it’s a beautiful and scary thing,” Majumder told The Nor’wester newspaper. “We are so happy that he is in power for comedy reasons. If we don’t get annihilated in a nuclear holocaust, it should be a good season.”
It was on This Hour that Majumder created one of his most comical alter-egos — Raj Binder, the sweaty, heavily accented Indian reporter.
Majumder, who with his wife, actor Shelby Fenner, divides his time between Halifax — where This Hour is filmed — Burlington and Los Angeles, remains one of Canada’s busiest entertainers.
The Gemini Award-winning actor continues to host the annual Just for Laughs Comedy Festival TV series, does standup tours and nurtures a Newfoundland tourism festival called The Gathering.
On the small screen, he has appeared in Unhitched, 24, Cedric the Entertainer Presents and Republic of Doyle. His film credits include roles in Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, The Ladies Man and Pushing Tin.
Majumder’s opening act is Myles Anderson, a standup comic and regular host at Heckler’s comedy club who was recently featured on the CBC Radio program Laugh Out Loud.
