Police officers hurt in weekend incidents
Two Victoria police officers were injured in separate incidents this weekend.
In the first incident, two officers were called to Stadacona Park on Pandora Avenue just after noon on Saturday after a report of a man sleeping in the women’s washroom, said Victoria police spokesman Bowen Osoko.
When police approached the man, he became aggressive and attacked them both.
One officer was left with non-lifethreatening injuries. The man was able to escape while the officer was being treated.
Early Sunday morning, another officer was injured as he chased a man armed with a knife.
Two officers spotted two men squaring up for a fight in the 700-block of Johnson Street about 4 a.m. Sunday. The officers noticed that one man was armed with a knife. The officers knew from prior interactions that the man was in breach of court-ordered conditions not to possess knives.
The man dropped the knife and fled. The officers gave chase and during the pursuit, one of the officers received nonlife-threatening injuries. The other officer continued the chase and caught up with the man.
Clutching two hypodermic needles, the man began to fight with the officer. A second knife dropped during the struggle. The officer got the man under control and was in the process of handcuffing him when the injured officer arrived to help.
The officers recovered the two knives and needles. The man is facing charges of breaching orders not to possess knives and not to possess drug paraphernalia.
Victoria police said both officers are recovering from their injuries.
