Halloween goes to pot: Gummies for kids laced with marijuana

-

Victoria police are urging caregivers and parents, especially those whose children were trick-or-treating in James Bay, to check their Halloween candy for illegal substances.

Police received a call on Halloween night from parents who said their children had received a package of marijuana gummies (along with a protein bar and some peanuts) at a home in the 100 block of Simcoe Street, between Montreal and St. Lawrence streets.

The package featured an image of a marijuana leaf and was labelled Black Cherry Zzz Bomb. A label on the package said the product contains about 80 milligrams of THC — in eight doses — and warns: “Contains cannabis. Keep away from children and pets.”

The parents handed the package over to officers, who went to the residence from which the gummies were thought to have come.

“During the course of their investigation, officers determined that the occupant appeared to not be aware of safe Halloween practices and may not have been aware of what had been handed out,” said a statement from Victoria police. “Officers instructed the resident to not hand out any more candy and to turn out the lights in the front of the house to deter further trick-or-treaters.”

Anyone who finds anything unusual in children’s Halloween bags is asked to call the Victoria police non-emergency line at 250-995-7654.
