What: Band of Rascals with Sweeet Action and Davenport Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St. When: Friday, 8 p.m. Tickets: $15 at Lyle’s Place and Ticketweb.ca Why: Band of Rascals have boogie rock down to a science, having gigged their way through cities around the province for the better part of four years. The Cobble Hill quartet (which calls its music “nuts and bolts rock and roll”) just wrapped a 13-date tour of the province opening for Bend Sinister, and will celebrate with a homecoming show at the Capital Ballroom. If previous shows are any indication, it will be a sweaty mess — in the best way possible. — Mike Devlin, Times Colonist

What: Scott Helman with Ria Mae Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St. When: Wednesday, 8 p.m.

Tickets: $15 at Lyle’s Place and bplive.electrostub.com

Note: Helman and Rae also perform Tuesday, Nov. 7 in Nanaimo at the Queens

Why: Toronto-based hitmaker Scott Helman is one big smash away from being Canada’s next Shawn Mendes. He’s got a similar set of skills — milliondollar smile, catchy pop choruses — but needs another year of seasoning before that could become a reality. That’s good news for audiences in Victoria, where Helman will perform next week with Ria Mae on a co-headlining tour. His big break could come at any minute. — MD What: Dawson City: Frozen Time Where: Cinecenta, UVic When: Nov. 4 and 5, 7 and 9:20 p.m. Why: You won’t see a more haunting or other-worldly documentary than director Bill Morrison’s found-footage gem, which chronicles the Yukon mining town’s history with a Hollywood twist. This one-ofa-kind cinematic experience interweaves archival footage from the Klondike gold rush of 1896 with an eerie assemblage of scratchy, flickering documentary and Hollywood movie footage found beneath what was once the local hockey rink in Dawson City. The result is a fascinating time capsule inhabited by literally buried memories of both pre-talkies moviedom and life in the gold-rush town. — Michael D. Reid, Times Colonist
