What a joyous month it has been for the royal family!
Just a week after the Queen and Prince Philip marked their 70th wedding anniversary, Prince Charles announced the engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, an American TV actor who has lived in Canada for the past seven years.
The couple’s wedding — he’s 33, she’s 36 — is scheduled to take place on the glorious grounds of Windsor Castle in May. It’s not clear who will be Harry’s best man, though older brother William would seem to be a strong contender.
Also this month, the Queen and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary was celebrated with the ringing of bells and a set of portraits.
It was a time to reflect on years past in the royal family. Princess Elizabeth was 21 when she married naval Lt. Philip Mountbatten, then 26, at London’s Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, 1947.
Their spectacular wedding was a spark of joy and celebration in a country recovering from the Second World War. Royal watchers in Canada and around the world revelled in the occasion.
Now 91, the Queen is the first British monarch to reach a platinum wedding anniversary.
To mark the event, the Royal Mail issued a series of commemorative stamps. And at Westminster Abbey, bell-ringers sounded a full celebratory peal — lasting more than three hours — in tribute. Buckingham Palace released several new portraits of the couple, taken in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.
