Make your vote count in referendum
Re: “Big referendum details are ‘hardwired’,” column, Nov. 25. If you care about good government, economic prosperity, social policy, environmental issues, education, health care, seniors or pretty much any issue, then please pay attention to the events unfolding in our legislature and the media.
Once again, B.C. voters have a historic opportunity to fundamentally change our government, discarding the faulty firstpast-the-post electoral system. A fairer system of proportional representation is being considered.
Now is the time to make your voice heard and don’t let anyone else speak for you. There’s been a lot of misinformation in the media, even before the government’s just-announced public consultation. That’s the travesty of their false claims about protecting democracy — that everything is fine the way it is, that they really care about democracy and they’ll represent B.C. voters’ interests. We wouldn’t have the various disasters like Site C, ICBC, MSP, etc., but for the acts of previously unaccountable false majority governments. Let’s give the majority control of our legislature and B.C.
B.C. Liberals have always opposed change — FPTP is the only way for them to get their hands on another four-year “dictatorship,” at the expense of the majority who don’t support them. Their attempt to dupe voters into believing their democratic rights are being threatened is stunningly ironic.
Our province has almost always been ruled by a minority, with their vested interests dictating government actions and succeeding, so far, in blocking electoral reform. B.C. said “yes” (58 per cent) before and can do it again — make your vote count.
