A new year without resolution
Re: “A positive wish for the new year in our region,” comment, Dec. 20. The plea for support by the Capital Regional District chairman and vice-chairman criticizing opposition and summarizing collaborative works was short on good examples. Ignoring the historic creation of our parks and water system, consider the past three years progress trumpeted by the writers.
The B.C. government had to intervene to get the sewage-treatment system on track, hardly a CRD triumph. Great job on a unified 911 in the area, but why is it still only “on the way,” and why did it take almost 30 years? The $30-million investment in homelessness seems to be an unplanned, overdue knee-jerk response with expenditures in 2019, maybe. Is it possible that homelessness has been viewed as a Victoria problem?
How can a person win a mayoral election in Sidney, receiving just 1,312 total votes, and end up being head of a “strong corporation” with a budget more than half a billion dollars representing 370,000 people? And what about the “Yes” vote to study amalgamation in his own jurisdiction that garnered a majority 2,566 votes?
I suggest criticism should be expected. So, if the CRD spends too much, plans poorly, emphasizes local over regional issues and removes angle parking on Dallas Road, who exactly do I not vote for next time?
But the request was for positive suggestions. The CRD positively must closely monitor and stay under budget on the sewage-treatment project or I will hold you accountable at the ballot box. Well, not you exactly, but someone. Yes, someone. James Campbell Victoria
