Toronto beaten by Compher’s OT goal

DENVER — J.T. Compher scored a power-play goal 3:25 into overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night. Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists, Alexander Kerfoot and Mikko Rantanen also scored for Colorado.

Semyon Varlamov had 31 saves for the Avalanche, who bounced back from losing to Arizona on Wednesday to beat another Eastern Conference power. Colorado swept two-time reigning champion Pittsburgh and split the season series with Washington.

Matt Martin, Roman Polak and James Van Riemsdyk had goals and Calvin Pickard stopped 24 shots for Toronto.

The Avalanche got a break in overtime when Connor Brown was given a minor for interferen­ce. Colorado had several chances, including MacKinnon hitting a post, before Compher beat Pickard with nine seconds left on the power play.

The Avalanche took a 3-2 lead when Kerfoot scored his 10th goal of the season at 4:34 of the third period. Toronto pressured for the tying goal and finally got it when Van Riemsdyk scored at 18:05 with Pickard off for an extra skater.

CHICAGO 4 EDMONTON 3 (OT)

EDMONTON — Patrick Kane put in his own rebound to score the winner 50 seconds into overtime as the Chicago Blackhawks topped the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 on Friday night.

Ryan Hartman, Alex DeBrincat and Jordan Oesterle also scored for the Blackhawks (18-14-5), who snapped a threegame losing skid.

Jesse Puljujarvi, Ryan NugentHopk­ins and Leon Draisaitl replied for Edmonton (17-18-3).

Jeff Glass, who was making his NHL debut in the Chicago net at 32, stopped 42 shots for the win. Cam Talbot turned aside 32 shots in defeat.

Puljujarvi’s power-play goal with 5:34 remaining in the first period opened the scoring as he showed nice hands to deposit a rebound past Glass.
