ROOTS MUSIC

What: Terry Robb with The Blue Hearts Where: Recreation Oak Bay, 1975 Bee St. When: Friday, 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $20 at eventbrite.ca Why: Acoustic blues guitarist Terry Robb has made several significant contributions to roots music during his fourdecade career, not the least of which is an unmistakably smooth playing style that has almost become a genre unto itself (his work with John Fahey, in particular, has made the B.C.-born, Oregonbased Robb an artist of renown in guitar circles.) He’s also a top draw in concert, where he dazzles listeners with his focused fret work and note-perfect chordings. Highly recommended. — Mike Devlin, Times Colonist

MUSICAL THEATRE

What: Pete Seeger’s The Incompleat Folksinger Where: Charlie White Theatre, Mary Winspear Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney When: Sunday, 2 p.m. Tickets: $15-$24 (children under 12 free) at marywinspear.ca or 250-656-0275

Why: Victoria performer Mark Hellman is still drawing crowds for Pete Seeger’s The Incompleat Folksinger, his one-man tribute to the late, great folk singer. Hellman took his show to Montreal and back in 2017, making waves along the way, but he’s back on local soil this weekend with a performance in Sidney at the Charlie White Theatre. Hellman is recording the performance for promotional purposes, so he’s asking Seeger fans to bring their singing voices, which will be put to good use during the rousing finale, If I Had a Hammer. — MD

ROCK MUSIC

What: The Zolas with Alex Little and The Suspicious Minds Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St. When: Saturday, 8 p.m. Tickets: $20 at Lyle’s Place and Ticketweb.ca Why: Juno Award nominees The Zolas (who earned a 2017 nod for breakthrough artist of the year) are using Vancouver Island to launch their concert calendar this year, which is good news for fans of the Swooner hitmakers. The Vancouver quartet of singer-guitarist Zach Gray, keyboardist Tom Dobrzanski, bassist Dwight Abell and drummer Cody Hiles has a new album in the can but not yet released, so those at the Capital Ballroom on Saturday (and those seeing the group at The Queen’s in Nanaimo on Friday) can expect several sneak peeks from what is sure to be one of the big B.C. recordings of 2018.
