Floating Ideas Lecture: The Ebb and Flow of Indigenous Tidal Pulse Fisheries in B.C. Thursday, Jan. 11, 7 to 9 p.m.
Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea Dr. Darcy Mathews presents the story of a monumental stone and wood fish trap on the Central Coast of British Columbia. For hundreds of years, the Heiltsuk people at the ancestral village of Hauyat used this trap to catch fish. Recent archaeological and ethnoecological work tells us about how this trap was built and used. Dr. Darcy Mathews is an assistant professor in the Environmental Studies at UVic. Darcy is currently researching a project with the Songhees Nation on Chatham and Discovery Islands. Regular admission applies, passes and members accepted. salishseacentre.org

Annual Wassail Celebration Sunday, Jan. 21, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse Sea Cider will host this free, fun-filled, family event at the Farm & Ciderhouse. Food and drink tickets available for purchase. Wassailing is an ancient custom to bless the orchard and scare away evil spirits. The word ‘wassail’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase ‘waes hael’, which means ‘good health’. Guided tours of the cidery and orchard, kids activities, complimentary welcome glass of cider, orchard blessing, Morris dancers, Mummers play. Located at 2487 Mt.
