Sewer-pipe work to close Niagara St.

-

James Bay residents living near Niagara Street are facing six weeks of construction hell as the neighbourhood is used as a staging area for assembly of the massive sewage pipe to be run under the harbour to McLoughlin Point.

Work has been underway for months drilling an undersea drill passage between Camel Point and McLoughlin Point where the sewage treatment plant is being built.

The plan is to use Niagara Street to lay down and weld together the sections of pipe, which are to be pulled through the drill passage.

For five weeks beginning in March, workers will work 12 hours a day 7.am. to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday and then 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays placing and assembling the pipe.

During the final week, work will continue around the clock.

While there will be emergency services access at all times, Niagara Street will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the work. Pedestrian access will be maintained to all residences at all times.

Current plans call for no parking on Niagara Street between Dallas Road and South Turner Street. Niagara Street residents will be able to park on side streets during construction.

Side streets intersecting Niagara Street will be generally closed to vehicles during this work; they will have a resident loading zone to assist with deliveries and pickup/drop-off.

Signage will be placed on side streets to deter non local traffic.

Alternate parking arrangements have been made for residents of high density buildings.

One-way residential traffic will be maintained on the south side of the 500-block of Niagara Street to preserve parking for high-density buildings.

“Local traffic only” signage will be posted to deter traffic on side streets and construction signage will be posted to show pedestrian routes and crossings.

An alternate access route will be provided for the James Bay Community School.

A help tent will be set up in the 200-block of Niagara, by the school, staffed by a project representative who will be available during working hours.
