Regina, Moose Jaw toss out blizzard of parking tickets

-

Drivers in Regina and Moose Jaw who were ticketed for failing to remove vehicles stuck in snowbanks during the latest big storm can throw them out.

Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said all parking tickets issued between 6 a.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Wednesday are being cancelled.

Fougere said the city understands drivers were given a ticket for something beyond their control.

Regina received about 35 centimetres of snow in the late-winter storm and outlying areas might have been hit by more.

The mayor said 117 tickets were issued on Monday alone, and anyone who has already paid a ticket can get a refund at city hall.

Moose Jaw has also announced that it is rescinding parking tickets to vehicles that got stuck.

“I’ve got to make that direct apology to those who went through this and we’re going to make sure we do better next time,” Fougere said Tuesday.

He added the city will review its policies to make sure parking enforcement is more reasonable in extraordinary circumstances such as snowstorms.

“We understand the issues facing drivers getting stuck in metered parking areas,” said Moose Jaw police Chief Rick Bourassa in a news release.

“We’ve asked our commissionaires to use discretion in these circumstances and, in some instances, our commissionaires have helped push vehicles out from those spots.”
