Rev it up! And live longer

- BY SUSAN SIMOSKO PRESIDENT, SIDNEY BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT AREA SOCIETY

Arecent study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre reports that as we age, even if we’re healthy, our hearts become less flexible and less efficient in processing oxygen. According to the study, exercise plays a significant role in keeping the heart flexible and maintaining good health. Think of the heart muscle like a rubber band, the authors of the study suggest.

In the beginning, it’s highly pliable. Put it in a drawer for 20 years and it becomes dry and brittle. The good news is that exercise, at any age, can help to stave off the heart’s decline. So with this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the great fitness options in Sidney and on the Saanich Peninsula. Panorama Recreation Centre: This community centre offers a wide range of fitness options. Whether you like water or land-based activities, individual or team sports, strenuous or gentle exercise, Panorama has it all. Staff are friendly, highly trained professionals who aim to get you moving, but all within your capability. Panorama is a great place to try something new in a safe environment, have fun and make new friends.
