Don’t be afraid to let teenagers vote

-

Re: “Teens need experience before voting,” letter, March 16.

There seems to be an element of fear about 16-year-olds being allowed vote.

The world as we know it will not come to an end. There are many brilliant young minds who can make our world a better place. These young adults are the ones who will have to pay for the mess we’ve created on the planet and and for huge debts run up by governments.

Sixteen-year-olds who have jobs pay income taxes. They can drive a car, have children and join military cadets. They are the ones who stimulate our economy and set fashion trends. Some take home the gold in the Olympics. Others sing, dance, act or write computer software and are capable of fame and fortune. Most understand social media, master electronics in minutes, ask smart questions and expect honest answers.

The school system is not preparing 16-year-olds to vote or how to balance an online banking statement. Until then, we will have politicians like Trump, Putin, Kim Jong-un. Canada has its own list of disgraceful leadership.

Sixteen-year-olds who are willing to vote will outnumber and shame those who are of voting age, but can’t be bothered to vote.

Good luck trying to outsmart, deceive or bluff a 16-year-old. Don’t be afraid. Empower and allow an opportunity for 16-year-olds to shape their future. Let them vote, and recycle our politicians.
