Golden Knights edge Canucks in shootout

- LAS VEGAS 5 VANCOUVER 4 (SO) Jets 5, Canadiens 4 (OT)

VANCOUVER — Defenceman Shea Theodore scored in a shootout to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night.

Theodore, the fourth Vegas shooter, scored on a backhand in a game the Knights almost let slip away.

Bo Horvat, Brandon Sutter and Nikolay Goldobin, with his second of the night, scored goals 5:01 apart in the third period as the Canucks erased a three-goal deficit. Goldobin tied the game at 10:53 when an innocent looking tip squirted past Vegas goalie Malcom Subban.

Vancouver’s Jake Virtanen was called for hooking 15 seconds into the overtime. Theodore scored for Vegas on the power play, but the goal was overturned due to goaltender interference.

Brandon Pirri led the Golden Knights with two goals in his first NHL game of the season.

The game was the first for Daniel and Henrik Sedin since announcing Monday they are retiring after Saturday’s seasonending game in Edmonton. In the third period, the brothers stood at the bench and waved to the crowd, who gave them a standing ovation. Vegas players banged their sticks on the ice.

William Karlsson had a goal and two assists for the Golden Knights (50-22-7), who are 8-3-2 in their last 14 games.

The Knights clinched top spot in the Pacific Division last Saturday. MONTREAL — Kyle Connor scored three minutes into overtime and Patrik Laine scored his 44th as the Winnipeg Jets posted their 50th win of the season with a 5-4 victory over the Canadiens in Montreal’s final home game of the season on Tuesday night.

Alex Galchenyuk had forced overtime with a power-play goal at 18:18 of the third period.

Sami Niku, with his first NHL goal, Nikolaj Ehlers and Jack Roslovic also scored for the Jets (50-20-10), who ended a four-game road trip.

Winnipeg, which had already established a club record for wins in a season, has taken nine of its last 10 decisions.
