Don’t paint with one brush

-

Re: “Crash doctor had treated Syria civil-war victims,” “The millennials are our future leaders,” column, April 8.

Painting entire groups of people with the same brush is one of my pet peeves. These two articles in the

Times Colonist on Sunday point out this ignorant way of thinking.

Dr. Hassan Masri was a crucial member of the team at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital caring for the injured Humboldt Broncos. He is the son of Syrian parents, and Canada is very fortunate that his parents came to Canada and raised such a wonderful Syrian-Canadian son. Yet we still hear stories about white supremacy, and protests against all refugees and immigration in Canada.

The second article was brilliantly written by Charla Huber. She noted contradictions such as a boss being annoyed when a millennial is checking their phone and does not quickly put it down when the boss walks in. That same boss likes emailing a millennial employee at 10 p.m. and having an answer by 10:15 p.m. As Huber points out, generation bashing has been going on forever.

As a baby boomer, I grew up when many changes came about, to the horror of our parents. There will always be those who fall through the cracks, and changes in the way business is conducted, mannerisms and parenting methods. I believe the majority get it at some time and become good citizens, contributing their best for our society.

Please put those brushes away.
