Get radical with randonneur cycling
Try out randonneur cycling — a longdistance cycling sport — at the Victoria Populaire, a fun, scenic ride around Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula, on Sunday.
In randonneuring, bicycle riders attempt courses of 200 kilometres or more, passing through predetermined checkpoints — it is not a race.
At Sunday’s event, hosted by the B.C. Randonneurs cycling club, riders choose between a 50- or 100-kilometre route, with post-ride refreshments and draw prizes.
The usual randonneur equipment rules and practices have been relaxed for this event — fenders and lights are optional. However, reflective clothing and rear lights are recommended.
Randonneur time limits also will not apply, so take your time.
Riders should be self-sufficient, carrying spare tubes, a pump, food and liquid refreshments. Water will be provided at control points.
It is also recommend that you carry identification and a phone.
The event costs $15 online in advance or $25 (cash only) on the day of event for adults and $10 for participants 19 years and younger.
Registration and check-in are at 7 a.m., with an 8 a.m. start for the 100-km event, 8:30 registration and check-in and 10 a.m. start for the 50-km event.
Registration and check-in will close 10 minutes before the start of each ride but will reopen for late registration and check-in for up to an hour following the start of each ride.
Registration and the start/finish line will be outside the James Bay Athletic Association Clubhouse, 205 Simcoe St.
Off-street parking is available in the City of Victoria parking lot adjacent to MacDonald Park. Some street parking available nearby and along Dallas Road (check signs to avoid residential and short-term parking areas).
