Public invited as Jewish community marks two events
Join Victoria’s Jewish community at two events Saturday and Wednesday in Greater Victoria.
Observe Yom HaShoah, an annual commemoration of those who perished in the Holocaust, Sunday at the Victoria Jewish Cemetery.
The event is a day to remember the past and to stand together as a community to speak out against injustice and look toward a future of peace and unity.
The event is hosted by the Victoria Shoah Project, a group of survivors, descendants, educators and individuals who commemorate and educate about the Holocaust.
The commemoration takes place from 11 a.m. to noon on Sunday at the cemetery, on Cedar Hill Road (south of Hillside Avenue). For more information, go to victoriashoahproject@gmail.com or Facebook. • Celebrate a milestone birthday at Israel at 70: Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Israeli independence, April 18 at the Da Vinci Centre.
The Jewish Federation of Victoria and Vancouver Island observes Yom Ha’Zikaron (Remembrance) with a ceremony and celebrates Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Independence Day) with a Middle Eastern buffet dinner (Kashrut observed).
Dance to the music of Sulam Ensemble, a seven-piece band from Vancouver.
Tickets are $20 adults, $10 students or $50 families. The event runs 5 to 10 p.m., April 18, at the Da Vinci Centre, 195 Bay St.
