Victoria police probe armed assault

- PEDRO ARRAIS

Victoria police officers were canvassing businesses along North Park and Cook streets Saturday as they tried to piece together an assault with a weapon that took place late Friday.

Employees at several businesses in the area said police were going door to door looking for surveillance footage of the incident, which took place about 11 p.m. Friday.

Patrol officers who arrived at the scene provided first aid to the man, who was found in the 1800 block of Cook Street, near a townhouse complex at the corner with Caledonia Avenue.

The man was taken to hospital with stab wounds that appeared to be non-life threatening, police said.

An area resident, who did not want to be identified, said eight police cars — all with their emergency lights on — gathered in front of her apartment building on North Park Street.

One of the vehicles responding belonged to the canine unit, which she said made its way west, toward Vancouver Street.

The woman described the scene as “surreal,” the police vehicles jamming the street with their doors wide open and nobody in sight.

Victoria police say the investigation is in its early stages and is ongoing. They ask anyone who might have information on this incident and has not yet spoken with officers to call 250-995-7654. To make an anonymous report, call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
