Voting change is last thing B.C. needs

Re: “NDP stacks voting-system referendum,” column, May 1.

I want to thank Les Leyne for bringing to light the fact that the B.C. NDP/Green government is about to do everything in its power to change our voting system to one of proportional representation. There is motivation for the NDP/Greens to do this to help them stay in control of the government permanently.

The sad truth is that a large percentage of the voting public in B.C., and elsewhere, does not vote for the party that will govern to keep B.C.’s economy strong for the long term. Instead, the majority of voters seem to support the parties that offer them the most perks for today. The future is not of any real concern to these voters.

We will see the B.C. economy faltering soon, as the serious effects of huge provincial spending increases, and the accompanying broadspectrum tax increases on nearly all businesses, and middle- and higherincome earners, are implemented.

The last thing that B.C. needs is a change in the voting system to make it more unlikely that another party would be able to gain power, and hopefully repair the damage currently being done to B.C.’s economy.

B.C. voters have to be very suspicious of any provincial government action that will make it difficult to oust that government from power, and those actions are underway with the clandestine designing of the proportional-representation referendum. Bill Wilson Saanichton
