Rutledge stays in hunt for Canadian PGA title

Former PGA Tour Champions player Jim Rutledge has his game back on track this week, and now hopes to out-match the competitio­n at the PGA Championsh­ip of Canada.

Rutledge finished third after two rounds of stroke play at Credit Valley Golf and Country Club in Mississaug­a, Ont. His rounds of 69 and 67 earn him the third seed for today’s third round, which is the start of the Round of 16 match-play portion of the tournament. Rutledge, who won this event in 1984, will square off against J.P. Cornellier this morning.

Bryn Parry of Point Grey Golf Club in Vancouver finished first after the stroke play portion thanks to rounds of 65 and 68. Danny King of Ontario was second, two shots back of Parry.

The tournament wraps up Friday afternoon with the final match.

Gorge Vale launches new women’s night

Gorge Vale Golf Club is calling all women who are interested in taking up the game or want to fine tune their skills, and have a ton of fun while doing it.

Gorge Vale’s new Women of Victoria Summer Golf Project starts tonight and runs every Thursday during the summer.

The day begins at 5:30 p.m. each Thursday and includes 90 minutes of instructio­n on the golf course and the range. Gorge Vale profession­als and former PGA Tour Canada and European Tour player Isaac Weintraub heads the list of instructor­s.

The project is aimed at all skill levels.

Brodsky triumphs on the court

Gail Brodsky recorded the double at the $15,000 US Encore FX Victoria Tournament, a stop on the Internatio­nal Tennis Federation pro circuit, which concluded Sunday at the Panorama Recreation Centre.

Brodsky, who has twice played in the U.S. Open, swept both the singles and doubles titles at Panorama, the latter with fellow American Brynn Boren earlier in the weekend.

Brodsky overcame seven double faults to defeat former NCAA Pac-12 Cal-Berkeley star Maegan Manasse 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the singles final Sunday at Panorama.

It was Brodsky’s second singles title in Victoria, adding to her championsh­ip in 2015, and her fourth career ITF singles title.

The native of Ukraine who was raised in Brooklyn, and who now lives and teaches tennis in the Seattle area, had a career high world ranking of 182.

Little Leaguers into playoff mode

The onset of July means Little League baseball playoffs and this weekend the 8- to 10-year-olds get things started.

The Little League Minor District 7 tournament begins Saturday at National Little League (Hillside Avenue and Cook Street). Layritz, Beacon Hill, Hampton, Lakehill, Central Saanich and the host team will battle for the district title and the right to move on to the provincial championsh­ip tournament, beginning July 14 at Layritz Little League.

Layritz and Beacon Hill get things started Saturday with an 11 a.m. game, and that’s followed by the opening ceremonies at 1 p.m. Hampton will then take on National at 3 p.m., followed by Lakehill and Central Saanich at 6 p.m. Round-robin play continues through next Thursday. The semifinals are slated for July 7 and noon and 3 p.m., with the championsh­ip game going July 8 at 11 a.m.

Reaume climbs truck series ladder

Starting 32nd and last in last weekend’s NASCAR Camping Truck World Series stop at Gateway Motorsport Park in Madison, Illinois, wasn’t about to slow down Josh Reaume.

The Victoria driver used his family-owned Reaume Bros. Colonial Countertop­s Chevrolet Silverado, to climb his way back to a career-best 18th-place finish.

Next up for Reaume is Friday night’s race at Chicagolan­d Speedway.
