Sprinkle multi-storey buildings through city

-

Re: “Victoria’s densification process raises concerns,” comment, June 30.

Michael Bloomfield, in his plea for a better effort to save his neighbourhood from densification, blames politicians and developers for pushing accelerated development. In fact, politicians and developers are simply reacting to the reality that more and more people are here, so it better get built.

This reality is not going to change any time soon. Victoria will always be the most favoured relocation destination for the winter-weary. Those cashing out from their Lower Mainland homes at a tidy profit find Victoria quite affordable in comparison. Aging single-family homeowners, in areas such as Gonzales, want to downsize into a condo or apartment in the neighbourhood. People come to Victoria because of the job opportunities and, for the more the economically distressed, better supported-housing services.

My plea, as valid and strong as Bloomfield’s, is that densification occur equitably. My neighbourhood is currently a diverse blend of singlefamily, duplex and multi-storey strata and apartments. We do not want densification loaded up in our neighbourhood until there is nothing but multistorey buildings here.

Multi-storey developments need to be sprinkled throughout all neighbourhoods, so that all of us have more than enough charming neighbourhood to enjoy. Joanne Thibault Victoria
