Raonic into third round at Wimbledon; Wozniacki out

-

LONDON — Milos Raonic’s big serve has powered the Canadian to another victory at Wimbledon.

The No. 13 seed advanced to the third round of the grass-court Grand Slam with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) victory over unseeded Australian John Millman on Wednesday.

Raonic, who said he was battling a virus, had just four break-point opportunities in the match, winning one.

But Millman did next to nothing against Raonic’s serve, converting on one of two breakpoint chances. Raonic had 34 aces, compared with three for Millman.

Raonic, 27, of Thornhill, Ont., fell just short of a Wimbledon record as one of his serves was clocked at 147 miles per hour. American Taylor Dent set the record in 2010 with a 148 mph blast.

“For the first set and a half, I didn’t really create much, especially on his serve,” Raonic told reporters after the match. “was fortunate to get through that tiebreaker on two well-played points.”

In other Wimbledon action on Wednesday, Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki was eliminated before the third round for the fourth time in seven years, losing 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to Ekaterina Makarova of Russia after complaining to the chair umpire about the insects that invaded No. 1 court during the second set.

There were no such problems for Roger Federer, who won 35 straight points on his serve on route to beating Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.

Serena Williams was nearly as good, losing just five of 32 points on her first serve in a 6-1, 6-4 win over Viktoriya Tomova. It was her 16th straight victory at Wimbledon, although she missed last year’s tournament while pregnant.

Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., and No. 26 seed Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., are scheduled to play second-round singles matches today. Shapovalov faces No. 17 seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia, while Shapovalov battles unseeded Benoit Paire of France.

Also today, Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil will team up with American Ryan Harrison to face the German duo of Philipp Petzschner and Tim Puetz in men’s doubles.
