The art of book-making on display at university
Be among the first to view uniquely crafted books from Canada and around the world at Art of the Book 2018, running until Aug. 26 in the Visual Arts Building at the University of Victoria.
The unique exhibition features 67 crafted pieces appearing publicly for the first time. The collection covers eight categories: fine binding, box making, papermaking, fine printing, paper decorating, restoration, calligraphy and artists’ books.
All works are by members of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild, which is hosting the exhibition.
The collection was chosen by an international jury and includes entries from as far away as the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Australia.
There will also be demonstrations of bookarts techniques such as papermaking, calligraphy and different sewing patterns throughout the show’s run in Victoria.
After Victoria, the books will be taken on a two-year tour across Canada.
The show is free to attend. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in the Audain Gallery in the Visual Arts Building at the University of Victoria.
A book-sewing demonstration takes place today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by calligraphy from 1 to 4 p.m.
A guided tour of the exhibition runs from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, you can learn about papermaking at two sessions, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. For information, go to artofthebook18.ca.
