Education at Children’s Hospice

- canuckplace.org

The Canuck Place schoolroom provides a vital sense of normalcy and outlet for creative expression during difficult times.

For children and families staying at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, life can feel chaotic and overwhelming. One of the comforts offered by Canuck Place is access to education with a bright, colourful schoolroom where Kay Lever, the full-time teacher at Canuck Place, provides specialized lesson plans from preschool through to grade 12.

For the children on the Canuck Place program and their siblings, the schoolroom provides a sense of normalcy and routine, and complements the care and support they receive at hospice. This allows children to stay on top of their curriculum from their community school and provides an outlet for expression.

“My focus is always on empowering each child to express themselves and to have that communication recognized and validated,”said Kay.“To see a child’s desire to look beyond their medical challenges for a short while and enjoy learning, exploring and developing fills my heart with joy.”

Along with education, Canuck Place provides pediatric palliative care to over 728 children and families from across B.C. including medical respite care, pain and symptom management, art, music and recreational therapy, end-of-life care, and grief, loss and bereavement counselling. All at no cost to the family.
