Public safety demands police amalgamation

-

Re: “Victoria police looking to team up with Saanich against cyber criminals,” Sept. 9.

When I read the headline about Victoria and Saanich police working together to fight cyber crime on the front page of Sunday’s paper, my first thought was: “You mean they haven’t been working together already?”

Then later in the article, politicians talk about saving money by trying to “avoid duplication by using integrated units.”

The final straw for me was the news that the Regional Crime Unit “folded due to disagreements among the Greater Victoria police departments.”

Crime does not respect meaningless municipal borders. On top of cost savings and efficiency, do we need any better reason for amalgamation of the Greater Victoria fiefdoms than public safety? Pam Irvine Saanich
