The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Game of Thrones rule Emmys

- BRIAN TRUITT

LOS ANGELES — One could say it was a “Marvelous” night at the Emmys.

The Amazon TV series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel led the field with five honours at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards — including wins for best comedy and lead actress (Rachel Brosnahan) — while HBO fantasy powerhouse Game of Thrones took the night’s big prize, outstanding drama, its third win in the category.

Other highlights included Claire Foy (The Crown) winning for lead drama actress, Bill Hader (Barry) for comedic actor, and three trophies for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, including best limited series.

In what could become the most talked-about moment of the night, Glenn Weiss used his acceptance speech for directing the Oscars telecast to propose to his girlfriend, stunning the celebrity-filled audience.

He was giving the sort of speech from a non-celebrity that makes most viewers tune out when he said that his mother died two weeks ago, and that she was fond of his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen.

“You wonder why I don’t want to call you my girlfriend?” he said to Svendsen. “It’s because I want to call you my wife.”

Svendsen was sitting shocked in her seat as Weiss tried to quiet the crowd so he could finish. He politely told his counterpart directing the Emmys telecast that he was going to need “a moment.”

Svendsen got up on stage for the formal, knee-bent proposal as Weiss presented her with the same ring that his father gave his mother 67 years ago and asked her to marry him.

She nodded without a word and sealed it with a kiss.

HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver won back-to-back trophies for variety talk series. Oliver’s son “hates our show and loves Paw Patrol,” Oliver said.

“If anything, our show is the exact opposite of Paw Patrol.”

Saturday Night Live received its second consecutive Emmy for best sketch show. “I love my job and I love the people I work with,” said creator Lorne Michaels. With the win, SNL broke its own record for most Emmys with a total of 72 total.
