19 Victoria candidates condemn theft of signs

Candidates for Victoria’s civic election are urging their supporters not to steal or vandalize election signs.

The move comes as 200 of Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps’ election signs have been stolen in recent days.

“My campaign manager informed me yesterday that over 200 of our signs have been stolen. That’s $1,000 worth of materials and early evidence suggests that it’s a targeted attack or a targeted effort by a number of individuals,” Helps said.

After the theft, Helps contacted council candidates, urging them to make a co-ordinated statement condemning vandalism and/or theft of signs.

As of Wednesday, 19 had signed a statement that reads:

“I believe that removing, vandalizing, or otherwise mistreating political campaign lawn signs undermines our democratic process. Not only is it unlawful and wasteful — as it prevents any recycling or reusing of sign materials — it is disrespectful to the many volunteers working hard to distribute and install these signs. I ask that everyone respect our laws and all candidates by not removing or vandalizing lawn signs.”

Helps said police have been contacted about the theft of her signs and some of her volunteers are so upset, they plan to stake out some areas to watch for thieves.

“It’s very discouraging. Not only is it anti-democratic, it’s a criminal activity to tamper with election signs.”

Helps said signs are not only being stolen from public property but also from private property, which amounts to trespassing.
