Don’t waste tax dollars on handouts

-

Re: “Camp organizer slams mayor, talks of long stay in Langford,” Sept. 25. I am upset by this mess at Goldstream Park. I know Mayor Stew Young and the city are doing everything they can to move these people along, but I believe we need to escalate, especially in the face of organizer Chrissy Brett’s terrible attitude.

I believe Brett should be arrested for inciting civil disorder. She is calling for the campers to break the law through their occupation of the park (some of these people are staying there legally, as they qualify as disabled). She has been arrested for obstruction and is, in my opinion, a menace to society. A no-contact order should be made between her and the residents of this so-called tent city.

If the park is going to remain closed, the RCMP should stop people bringing anything in to support the occupiers.

I know that a small percentage of these people are not able to work. The majority could, but they have become comfortable doing little to nothing and expecting a lot.

I have dealt with problems. I have seen people close to me become consumed by addiction and crime. I am also First Nations. I know that life is what you make of it. If these people are made comfortable, they will do nothing to change their lives.

I support reopening Riverview Hospital and expanding the Eric Martin Institute for those who need help, but I am not OK with my tax dollars being wasted on housing and caring for those who just want a handout. Joel Creese Langford
