NANAIMO COUNCIL

-

Gary Korpan**, 65, retired lawyer nanaimonet.com/ 440749053 Top three issues:

Restore Good Governance; Stop wasteful spending; Ensure public safety.

One big idea:

Restore the Shared Vision coalition of community institutions that worked cooperatively and successfully together and advocated jointly with senior governments to implement City wide priorities including the Aquaculture Visitor Centre proposal which would be an excellent tourism attraction when linked to revitalized Newcastle Island Park amenities and Snuneymuxw First Nation cultural activities.

Brian Loos, 34, ship and dock foreman facebook.com/BrianLoos-For-NanaimoCity-Council2313994038616415 Top three issues:

The principle concerns we have here in Nanaimo are concerns each municipality has. Uniting the municipalities to reach the Provincial and Federal governments with one clear and consistent voice and message. Conversations need to be had with municipalities 5-10 years ahead of us. See what benefited them and what they wish they had done. Urban planning and branding Nanaimo is key to our future. Value, people need to get value from their investment in the city.

One big idea:

Locally just the basics. Plan accordingly and taking small steps in the proper direction. Protect our parks, environment and watershed along the way. Move drug addiction to the Provincial and Federal level away from municipalities. We need a united nationwide solution. We pay MSP and I am comfortable with that. If my family ever falls ill from cancer they are taken care of. Perhaps that is a commitment we should all make to Drug Addiction.

Zeni Maartman**, 61, on management team at BCAA www.zenimaartman fornanaimo.com Top three issues:

Great Leadership — A change in the work culture so all employees feel respected, valued, and engaged. A focus on good governance, leading by example with respectful conversation, working collaboratively, to find the common ground for the common good. Encouraging economic development with newer technology, green initiatives, the cannabis industry. Housing, housing, housing on all levels. Social and environmental responsibility go hand in hand with a healthy economy.

One big idea:

Partnering with the Snuneymuwx First Nations and the Indigenous Community to enhance and build on our Tourism Industry. Completing the south end waterfront that sits empty at this time. The planning is complete, now we need to attract projects, privately funded such as the Ocean Discovery Center and capitalize on the naturalness of Nanaimo and area, inclusive of Newcastle, our rivers, lakes, ocean and mountains. We have it all, now let us rise to be the best throughout our City.

Lloyd MacIlquham, 67, lawyer facebook.com/LloydMac-for-NanaimoCity-Council2063973870486773 Top three issues:

Restoring the confidence in City Council; establish transparency; and, bringing City Hall back to the people. I feel that with this done, City hall can approach the various issues and resolve them in a fashion that will be a good solution, fiscally responsible and socially sound, one that is acceptable to all the stakeholders, especially to the most important one: the people of Nanaimo.

One big idea:

Bring the City back to the People through transparency, outreach to the community and by facilitating meaningful dissemination and input to and from everyone, Council individuals and stakeholders.

Caranjit (Jeet) Manhas**, 57, small business owner meetjeet.com Top three issues:

1) Social and Affordable housing 2)Rebuilding the Organization and Stakeholder relationships 3) Restoring the trust of the people of Nanaimo by listening, communicating and consulting.

One big idea:

My big idea for my Community is Inclusion and Diversity, embracing individuals with Disabilities and creating an environment where every one is valued and treated respectfully and fairly.

Bill Manners, 63, customer service specialist 2018council.com Top three issues:

Economic Development: People deserve jobs that lift them above the poverty level. Just getting by is not good enough. I want the next generation to stay in Nanaimo. Community Engagement: Listen to the people & we improve Nanaimo. We need to listen, think, and then act. The Core Services Review: Valuable information is there to help our city function more efficiently as our population exceeds 100,000. I am pushing for these changes to make a brighter future for our amazing city.

One big idea:

Our walkway from Departure Bay Beach to downtown Nanaimo and extending out to Chase River has been thirty years in the making. I would not only like to see it completed, but also improved. I have ideas for updates that are small in price but will enhance the aesthetics and useability for everyone. More will be available in the coming weeks on my website, 2018council.com

Darcy Olsen, 45, administrative assistant to MP darcyolsennanaimo. blogspot.com Top three issues:

Affordable Housing Solutions Attracting investment to create good jobs Rebuilding Community partnerships

One big idea:

I will work to restore faith in Nanaimo through cooperative interaction in governance, engaging in open two way communication with citizens and a dedication to honesty and transparency.
