NANAIMO COUNCIL
Rick Smith, retired Top three issues:
1. Doing something about the “homelessness” situation. 2. Using Nature’s ideal carbon capture and storage devices-treesto make the city a more livable space. 3. Reducing expenditure to avoid tax increases, and make the city affordable for the citizens.
One big idea:
I hope to plant 10,000 trees within the city, to remove tonnes of CO2, provide oxygen for up to 40,000 people, and beautify our city. We would provide, free of charge, one tree to any homeowner who wants one. There are parks, roadsides and other sites that could be utilized for this purpose. It is the best “win-win” project possible. Any city could do this as long as the will to do it is there.
Fred Statham** facebook.com/ themidislandfalcon Kevin Storrie**, 68, former building contractor and businessman facebook.com/ teamstorrie603276376712584 Top three issues:
1. To re-establish harmony and unity to Nanaimo city council 2. Have the city ready to deal with the current affordable housing crisis, in partnership with the provincial and federal governments. Immediately form an affordable housing action committee in preparation. 3. Work towards a sustainable and profitable economy for our city. Offering well paid jobs and careers.
Balakrishna (Viraat) Thammanna**, 52, business administration vbkthammanna.ca Top three issues:
Job creation, Public safety, Youth & Senniors.
One big idea:
Educating, plannning and organising communities for the wellbeing of every one. Please visit my web site www.vbkthammanna.ca
Al Thompson facebook.com/ groups/ 1867170110202904 Ian Thorpe*, 66, retired teacher and administrator ianthorpe.ca Top three issues:
1. Governance and credibility. Although several issues face our city, I see the first and main priority as reestablishing proper principles of governance, where Councillors and staff know their roles and duties, and interact appropriately. We need to re-build Council’s credibility. 2. Housing affordability. This is a huge issue that requires cooperation from the provincial government. 3.Economic prosperity, fiscal accountability, and maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy community.
One big idea:
One of Nanaimo’s main assets is its waterfront. I want to see our waterfront walkway expanded, our Port Drive waterfront area developed appropriately, and a passenger ferry service to the mainland established.
Jim Turley, 70, retired flower shop owner turleyfornanaimo.com Top three issues:
We need a Council that can work together and to empower our staff to provide the assistance and direction to allow Nanaimo to be the success it should be. The turn around time for permitting needs to improve. We need a realistic asset management plan. The homeless have become an increasing difficult problem to solve so we need innovation to come up with a liveable solution .
One big idea:
It is essential to work on the development of tourism in the harbour area. The one thing, along with several others, that would be a big plus in this building of a First Nations interpretive center that would give tourist a sampling of what they would find on Newcastle Island, a short boat ride across the Harbour. For far too long Nanaimo has been seen as a City one has to travel through to get to some where else on the Island that may have more appeal.
Avel Turnip, 28, health care assistant facebook.com/ PeachAndTurnip Top three issues:
Homelessness is my first priority as it is the most urgent issue we face in Nanaimo. Crime comes near a close tie and thirdly addressing the support services that Nanaimo has to offer it’s citizens.
One big idea:
My running mate and myself feel it is time for Nanaimo to have Municipal Police to help support the law enforcement of our city.
