Rebels have eye on Sun and next season

GAME DAY: WESTSHORE AT OKANAGAN, 7 P.M.

The Westshore Rebels will be playing only for pride when they finish out the B.C. Football Conference campaign tonight in Kelowna against the Okanagan Sun.

Westshore was the 2016 Cullen Cup league champion and Canadian Bowl runner-up. The Rebels were the 2017 regularseason champion and Cullen Cup runner-up to the Vancouver Island Raiders.

Despite the disappointing season, the Rebels go into the final game with one bright spot — quarterback Mason Brown was named offensive player of the week for his 275 yards passing on 25 completions, three touchdown throws and 81 yards rushing despite the 52-38 loss last weekend to the Fraser Valley Huskers.

The playoff dance is set with the Sun (6-2-1), Langley Rams and Valley Huskers (both 6-3) and Vancouver Island Raiders (5-4) having clinched the playoff berths. The Rebels (3-5-1) and Kamloops Broncos (0-9) will miss the playoffs.

The Sun can clinch home field throughout the Cullen Cup playoffs with a victory tonight in the Apple Bowl against Westshore.

The V.I. Raiders, meanwhile, close out against the Huskers at 1 p.m. today at Caledonia Park in Nanaimo. The defending leaguechampion Raiders can finish no higher than third, so will not host a playoff semifinal next weekend.

The Raiders landed three players on the BCFC all-offensive team with receiver Mike West, running-back Rhett Williamson and lineman Traven Traveller. Raiders named to the all-league defensive unit were lineman Conner Kyliuk and defensive-back Jeremie Cheng.

The Rebels were shut out in the league all-star sweepstakes.
