Our marriage has been hard work, Beckham says
David Beckham says the secret of his 19-year marriage to Victoria Beckham is “hard work.”
“To have been married for the amount of time that we have, you know, it’s always hard work,” Beckham said in an interview with Australian TV show The Sunday Project, which airs this weekend.
The retired soccer star and former Spice Girl have four children together. They frequently deflect breakup rumours that have intensified over the past year.
However, Beckham acknowledged their relationship is complex. “It becomes a little more complicated,” he said.
Beckham also discussed the couple’s children — sons Brooklyn, 19, Romeo, 16, and Cruz, 13, and daughter Harper, seven — and his life as a father.
“Sometimes, it’s the little things that make a big difference,” Beckham said. “I’ve noticed that with my children. The thing we have to do is protect our children.”
In June, Victoria Beckham quashed speculation that the couple were heading toward divorce in an Instagram post of her hugging Harper with the caption: “We love and miss u David Beckham.”
“People have been making things up about our relationship for 20 years, so David and I are pretty used to ignoring the nonsense and just carrying on as normal,” the fashion designer said in her October cover story for the British edition of Vogue.
“But these things have a wider effect on the people around us, and that’s unfair.
“We are much stronger — the six of us — than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond, and that is key.”
