Dozens to search for Nanaimo man last seen Oct. 25

-

This weekend, dozens of searchand-rescue volunteers will scour the Nanaimo shoreline in hopes of finding a 72-year-old man who has been missing for more than a week.

Rick Larsen left his south-end Nanaimo home on Oct. 25 and has not been seen or heard of since, Nanaimo RCMP said.

On Saturday and Sunday, 45 search-and-rescue personnel, 20 volunteers with Nanaimo RCMP’s community policing section, and friends of Larsen’s family will search the shoreline near his home, just off Haliburton Street. They will also check nearby parks and Westwood Lake, where Larsen likes to hike.

Volunteers will be handing out posters and going door-to-door asking area residents if they have seen Larsen.

Larsen is an avid hiker who often walks 10 kilometres or more each day.

When Larsen left his home on Oct. 25, he took his wallet but not his cellphone or house keys. There has been no activity on his bank cards, said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien.

Police have searched from the air and with search dogs, while search-and-rescue teams have used bicycles to cover terrain in parks, paths and trails throughout Nanaimo. So far, there have been no clues as to where Larsen might be.

Police ask anyone with information on Larsen’s whereabouts to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
